Gravix Wall Systems
Project Overview
The Department of Transportation is providing safety and operational improvements along the entire corridor of Pine Mountain Road. The 1.5 miles of Pine Mountain Road will be widened to three 12-ft. lanes, sidewalks were added to both sides of the road, and retaining walls were constructed to minimize right-of-way impacts.
American Engineers Inc. (AEI), the project civil engineer, called upon Piedmont Precast to inquire about the Gravix precast retaining wall system. With over 25ft of grade change and just under 17ft of room to stay within the right of way, Gravix was selected because of the limited excavation and impact required to install the wall.
Baldwin Paving, the prime contractor on the project, was also the wall installer. Because Gravix can benefit from the weight of the backfill, Baldwin Paving was able to use asphalt millings from other jobs as backfill for the wall. The Gravix engineering team received samples and performed analysis to grade this material as acceptable. Baldwin paving set a blistering install pace and was able to stack and backfill the Gravix wall in just six working days.
